Q: What ski trip do you recommend I consider if I am a 1st time skier?

A: We highly recommend the NBS Eastern Region Early Season Warm Up (n.k.a The Homecoming Experience) typically held sometime during the 1st full week of December each year. This trip is specifically designed for 1st time skiers and snowboarders. The trip is half-week (Wed-Sun). Onyx offers a complimentary Never Ever package for 1st time skiers and snowboarders. The package includes a free 1–2-day lesson, free equipment rental, and free lift tickets. The trip also offers discount early season lodging rates.

Q: I can’t find anyone to travel with me. What do you recommend?

A: Onyx and the NBS are like a big family. If you are traveling alone, we are very good at finding you experienced skier roommates that will guide you at every step from meeting you at the destination airport and traveling with you to the resort to helping you secure your ski equipment to escorting you to your first ski lesson.

Q: I have children under the age of 18. Are children welcome at the ski events?

A: Absolutely! Onyx has a very active youth group. Specific information on our yout group is found elsewhere on this site. One of the missions of Onyx is to introduce our youth to winter sports. The club typically sponsors an annual youth trip where financial support is available for most youth participants.

Q: How much does a ski trip cost?

A: The cost varies considerably depending whether the trip is a full week or a half week, where you are flying from and depending on your lodging arrangements. If you are budget conscious, we recommend that you consider a half week trip and that you consider a roommate. Not including food, a typical half week trip consisting of airfare, ground transportation, lodging, lift tickets and a 2-day ski lesson can range from $1,500 – $2,100.

Q: What are some of the non-ski activities that you participate in?
A: The NBS typically hosts daily happy hours where you can get your “party on”. Also, most resorts offer spa treatments daily and Onyx often offers side events such as snow mobiling, dog sledding, ice skating, sleigh riding and day trips to exotic local attractions.

Q: I hear that ski clothing can be expensive. Is that true?
A: The purchase of basic ski clothing can indeed be a significant investment. One of the benefits of joining Onyx is in 2022, we implemented the “ski jacket borrow program for 1st time skiers”. This program permits 1st time skiers to borrow the basic items such as a ski jacket, ski gloves and/or ski pants. In that way, if you decide skiing is not for you, your investment is minimal. If you decide that you enjoy the sport, we recommend you invest in a quality ski jacket, perhaps 1-2 pair of ski pants and a pair of ski gloves. Typically, local ski shops and sporting goods stores offer huge discounts during the off-season months of July – September.

Q: What equipment do I need for skiing?
A: The basic equipment that you will need are skis and poles, ski boots and a ski helmet for safety. All of these items however are offered for rent by resorts, so you don’t have to invest a significant amount of money initially. If you decide you enjoy the sport, we recommend your first investment be a pair of ski boots and a quality ski helmet. Again, you can find huge discounts on ski equipment during the off-season.

Q: I often hear about skiers incurring major injuries, and I have observed friends returning from ski trips with broken limbs. Should I be concerned?
A: Yes, safety is a concern and that is why Onyx Ski & Sports Club and the NBS place a high priority on safety. We have national, regional, and club safety directors. Ski instructors also emphasize safety. In today’s skiing environment, a ski helmet is a necessity to help minimize injury. Helmets are available for rent at most resorts. If you decide that you enjoy the sport, we highly recommend that you invest in a quality ski helmet.

WHY JOIN?

Onyx Ski & Sports Club members represent all walks of life, but we are united by at least one thing — fun on the slopes.

Whether we are skiing or snowboarding experts who never miss a chance to plow through powder or novices just getting our feet — or skis – wet, all are welcome.

In addition, Onyx engages in activities off the slopes, such as cookouts, golf tournaments, movie nights, bowling, biking, card and beach parties, distance running, cruises, South Florida music-fests and more.

Onyx offers members, including travel to Premier Ski and non-Ski Destinations; group discounts on trips; new challenges; and opportunities to network and develop friendships with people who share common interests.

Onyx also offers a program where members will allow 1st time skiers to borrow basic ski clothing. In this way, your initial investment is minimal in the event you decide the sport is not for you.

One of the premier non-ski events that we offer is the Eastern Region Summerfest. Typically, the 4-day event is hosted at exotic South Florida beach resorts or even more exotic resorts in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

For potential members with children, Onyx offers a Youth Group where the club provides financial assistance for children to attend youth ski events.

Members can also take active roles in determining their clubs’ directions and operations, too!
